The name Garipa is probably due to the surname of the first settler. A similar surname exists today. With the same name we also find other settlements in other prefectures of Crete. However, we are not able to speak with certainty about the origin of the name despite the fact that the name Garipu is attested in documents from 1368.
In the past, where Garipa is located, there were two settlements, Apano and Kato Garipa (recorded in the masculine gender – Garipas – in an Egyptian census). The now extinct village of Katsikali also belonged to its region. Katsikali is mentioned in a census in 1577 and in the following centuries, until 1940. In 1583, Garipa is mentioned under the name Garippa with 106 inhabitants. (Kastrof. K96). In the 1583 census as Drapetti we also see Drapeti (Castlekeeper, K96). Earlier, Drapeti is mentioned in a document of 1271 and Garipa in a document of 1394. Drapeti belonged to the Community of Kalivia until 1940. During the Turkish occupation, the village had an exclusively Muslim population. The current inhabitants of the village are of origin from Lasithi and Asia Minor.
